Fall Activities and SALE on all in-stock Meat Purchases!

Saoirse is excited to hear about all of our Autumn Adventures - and I am excited to tell you about them! I am not here to wax eloquent and poetic about all the beauties of Autumn (although, rest assured, I'm thinking about them!), as I have so much to share of the farm and harvest activities. (Of course, Saoirse is the cutest of those things, but only so far, as we are expecting another calf soon. I am sure the competition will be fierce as to which will be the most adorable.) And I will also be talking about our big End-of-Season sale, that I am hoping you will enjoy! You can scroll to the end if you just want to know about the sale!

WHEN YOUR DREAMS - AND YOUR HARVEST - COME TO FRUITION

I mean, LITERALLY. We planted dozens of fruit trees about seven years ago, knowing we wouldn't see the fruits of our labor ;) for many years. This year, we finally have! First this year were our tart pie cherries, which were so very popular. And now, PEARS!

We have actually had small harvests of pears for a few years, but learning to properly harvest pears has been a learning experience for me. And pears have been tricky to learn.

You can’t let them ripen on the tree, or that is too late and they will be mush when you eat them. But you don't want to pick them too early, either! Once you do pick them, they need to “cure” for a time before they are ready to eat. Some store well, some don’t. Phew! It’s a lot to learn. But after so much trial and error, I feel so good about the pears we have to offer you! And if a pear was potentially a little too soft, a little too scarred, a little too ugly (and let’s be honest- as much as I love them, pears are just not the most attractive fruit out there ), they didn’t make it into a bag.

WE ARE CLEARING OUT THE SUMMERCRISP PEARS THIS SATURDAY! It is the end of the season for the Summercrisp, and I have all the bags filled up. I was pretty generous in filling the bags because I need to make room for the Luscious Pears that I have just started harvesting. Stop by to get a nice heavy bag of Summercrisp Pears before they are gone for the year!

OH, SO SWEET!

Honey, Honey, Everywhere! (And definitely at the market on Saturday!)

After several years, and so many different struggles (including an ER visit for me!), with keeping bees, this is our first year of being able to harvest enough honey to offer some to our community, too. Although I know our beekeeping skills have improved with every year, the biggest reason we had such abundant honey was because of the beautiful spring and summer, with plentiful rain and moderate temperatures. Shiloh Valley Farm was truly flowing with milk and honey!

It was a new experience for us, and involved buying a honey extractor and related tools, which we hadn't anticipated even needing yet this year. But we did, and it all worked so smoothly and beautifully. I had heard and read intimidating stories about how hard it could be and what a mess it was. We laid out a tarp on the kitchen floor just in case and covered our work surface with some new plastic sheeting, but it was really not necessary. (Apparently, the best happens when you prepare for the worst!) Although I know next year might not have such lovely weather, we are still hopeful for lots of sweet harvests in our future. Using the extractor allowed us to harvest the honey without destroying the comb, so the bees will have less work next year, and more time to devote to HONEY!

PICK A PUMPKIN!

Michael and his young apprentice, David, have grown some fun pumpkins this year, so come check out the selection for fall decorating and Jack O' Lanterns. They also grew some delicious Winter Luxury pie pumpkins! We have a fantastic recipe for you (pictured at right) of one of our favorite fall recipes. Scroll to the end for the recipe!
